Challenger Learning Center Honors Ruth King McKee

s Ruth McKee neared her death, she shared her one regret with her family – she wished she could have spent more time as a teacher, her first profession.

Soon after her death, the family began to look for a way to bring lasting honor to her memory. They agreed to fund the Mission Control classroom of the planned Challenger Center in Chattanooga and name it in her honor, thereby allowing teachers and students to study together in a classroom that bears her name.

There are 53 Challenger Centers in the United States, Canada, and England. These Centers got their start when family members of the seven Challenger Space Shuttle crew members wanted a way to honor the memories of their loved ones who perished in the explosion on January 28, 1986. They decided to raise funds to develop centers where students and teachers apply scientific principles as they control a two-hour mission simulation with one group on the Space Station and the other at Mission Control.
