April 2008

  • McKee Foods is best known for its line of Little Debbie® snack cakes. Little Debbie® is America’s leading snack cake brand in unit sales because we provide consumers with quality products of excellent value. McKee Foods’ annual sales are about 1.1 billion.
  • The company was founded in 1934 by the late O.D. and Ruth McKee. They converted a cookie shop into a 5-cent cake bakery in Chattanooga, Tenn. The business was known as McKee Baking Company from the 1950s until 1991, when the name was changed to McKee Foods Corporation.
  • McKee Foods was the first bakery to sell individually wrapped cakes in a multipack carton. In 1960 the company introduced the Little Debbie brand and began selling the individually wrapped cakes in multipack cartons. The product line was named after a granddaughter of the founders. A carton of 12 cakes had a suggested retail price of 49 cents at that time. Twelve cakes would have cost 60 cents if sold separately.
  • McKee Foods offers more than 150 varieties of Little Debbie® family pack snacks, including seasonal products. Little Debbie® snacks are also sold in single-serve packages for vending machines and retail displays. Our products are sold in all 50 states, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico and U.S. military commissaries overseas.
  • The company also produces 27 different family pack snacks and granola cereals under the brand name Sunbelt. These products are found in the granola bar section of retail stores.
  • Recently the company introduced Fieldstone, a brand of cookies, breakfast pastries and other snacks targeted to meet the needs of the foodservice industry.
